Night 5 Dinner in the MDR
So I was NOT going to miss it tonight even though we were scheduled to cruise through the Endicott Arm fjord during dinner. It was so quiet in the dining room it was like being in church and let me tell you, that cornbread was a religious experience. Anyway, I walked through downtown for research purposes (I’m working on an article for the blog about Alaska cruising in April) and then headed out for today’s hike on the Perseverance Trail. I don’t hike this trail as often when I visit Juneau because I usually opt to hike to the top of the Mt Roberts tram. But the tram wasn’t open for the season yet, so I wouldn’t have the option of taking it back down the mountain (which I don’t usually do anyway, but psychologically I like having the option).

In the evenings, Ryan offered a variety of pub-style tunes alternating between guitar and piano, making for some lively nights in this venue. On our Norwegian Encore cruise, we had a 7-night dining package, so we were able to sample most of the specialty restaurants. Many cruisers will receive a 2-meal specialty dining package on a week-long cruise as part of the line’s Free at Sea promotion. Cruisers can then opt to purchase additional night packages if they choose. Cruisers who have loyalty status with NCL may also receive additional meal credits. On Deck 16, there is also the Garden Café, Norwegian Encore’s buffet.
If you are dining at one of the specialty restaurants aft on Deck 8, you won’t want to pass up the A-List Bar. This hidden gem is an upscale lounge with dark wood tones, oversized chairs, and a large U-shaped bar. For cruisers looking for something more casual, Q Texas Smokehouse on Deck 6 offers authentic Texas-style BBQ. The venue features live music during dinner and classic menu items like chili, deviled eggs, rotisserie chicken, smoked turkey, and brisket, coupled with sides like mac & cheese and potato salad. Q is also home to one of our favorite cocktails, the “Smoked Peach Margarita” on tap.
Both options were very good and probably some of the best we’ve had at sea. After the show, we felt it was only proper to round out our night at the District Brewhouse. If the Sugarcane Mojito Bar is my favorite, this is definitely Don’s favorite.
Their Reuben was really tasty, but their appetizers left much to be desired. We just enjoyed the vibe of this restaurant as it was casual and had nice booths with windows to enjoy the scenery. And there are also TVs which we enjoyed a few football games. There is also the option to upgrade to the Premium Plus Drink Package which includes many higher-end liquors and wines for an additional $29 per day. So doing some light math, let’s say you start drinking in the early afternoon and have one drink per hour. Then you go to dinner and switch to wine, let’s say you have 2 glasses ($9 + $15).
Rotating between 3 different menus, the Chicken Parmigiana Heidi had on Day 3 rivaled any cruise line’s similar offering for dinner. Likewise, I was more than impressed with the Cuban Rotisserie Chicken and the peanut butter cup cheesecake. These restaurants were also open for breakfast; though, we never got around to testing out a sit-down breakfast. When it comes to casual dining options, the Norwegian Encore cruise ship offers a few choices.
After some free time to walk around on our own and visit the gift shop, we were off to Downtown for our lumberjack show. Sipping the signature smoked peach margarita, we stayed for a bit before calling it a night. Following the comedy show, we headed over to Q for Nashville Nights and Lights.
